On Aquaman: And Why You’ll Want to See Him Again and Again

I never grew up reading comic books or watching the cartoon series that came out for certain characters. Honestly, I didn’t get it. I thought the few superhero movies I watched were weird. Until I saw Batman vs Superman. Wonder Woman was one bad chick, and the cameos of Cyborg, Flash and Aquaman made me do some research. That research turned into a deep dive into Marvel vs DC, which superheros belonged to which group and binges on all the Netflix Marvel superhero series. Prior to seeing Aquaman on the early release on December 15, I was a Marvel fan (with the exception of Wonder Woman). But after seeing it, I was blown away. It doesn’t top Black Panther for me, but it’s a close second with Wonder Woman coming in at #3. And I might go back opening weekend. I already plan on buying the DVD…and here’s why you probably will too:

***SPOILER ALERT***

1: He was FLAWED. GOD was he FLAWED. He could drink any Sailor I knew under the table. He had a chip on his shoulder. And a grudge against a whole race of people he’d never met. But ladies, aren’t our flaws what make us all human? And there’s a scene in the movie where he admits to ALL his flaws. He went to retrieve the Trident and the creature that was guarding it called him every label he’d heard on his journey there: mongrel, half-breed, unworthy. And what did Arthur do? He used his superpower on him and said “you’re right…I’m all those things”. In the end, that creature backed down instead of killing him and Arthur retrieved the trident.

2: He was tender-hearted: He looked after his heartbroken father. He was a hero to people who treated him like an outsider. And he was protective of Mera even though she was tough. I think we often see men as being who have no feelings simply because they’re conditioned to not share them. But even though Arthur had been treated like an outsider all his life, he had a heart that was big enough to care about the justice of those around him. And he didn’t play up on the attention it got him either.

3: Atlantis and all the underwater scenes were BREATHTAKING: Think Wakanda underwater. I wasn’t sure how things would play out when I saw underwater scenes from the movie in the trailer. But these scenes are some of the most breathtaking things I’ve seen in my life. And while we know that there aren’t mermen and mermaids, I don’t know…this was pretty believable.

Yes Jason Mamoa is a good looking man. But he also seems to have a good heart. And his personality and sense of humor definitely lit the movie up. He made Aquaman a star.
